'Lost on Purpose' filming at Valley locations

VISALIA – Low-flying planes, passing trucks and a passer-by already have forced directing brothers Ian and Eshom Nelms of Woodlake to interrupt filming a scene from their independent movie "Lost on Purpose."

That's a big deal when there is no room in the schedule – or budget – for too many delays. And on "Lost on Purpose" both are big issues because it's shooting in 25 locations including the often-interrupted scene at a small dairy that is spitting distance from Highway 99 and the Visalia airport.

Multiple locations are a rarity for indies. "Lost on Purpose" is depending on the kindness of locals to provide free-filming locations and for actors to either be volunteers or willing to take pay far below their usual asking fee.

On several occasions last month, cast and crew had to stop filming in one location in Tulare County to quickly move to another because it was only available for a short time.

"Lost on Purpose" tells the story of five renegade ranch hands who work on a San Joaquin Valley dairy farm. They must fight for their jobs, and each other, when financial strain puts the farm in jeopardy of being sold.

Cast and crew are a mix of Los Angeles imports and locals. Clovis High School graduate Aaron Hill plays D1, one of the farmhands who is trying to figure out what to do with his life. Hill has just wrapped up work on the ABC Family series "Greek," a TV show with a catering budget larger than what will be spent in total on "Lost on Purpose."

Hill, 28, says he was attracted to "Lost on Purpose" because the script, written by the directing brothers, captured the feel of his generation: Told you can do anything, but not too clear on what that should be.

The script is why Jane Kazcmarek, best known for her spirited role as the mom on "Malcolm in the Middle," agreed to be in the movie.

"I grew up in Wisconsin and I could relate to this story about what's happening to farmers," Kazcmarek says. She says that because she has three children, she's not interested in working much. But she related enough to "Lost on Purpose" to be in Visalia for 10 days of filming.

Kazcmarek and Hill, who worked together 10 years ago on "Malcolm in the Middle," are not the only recognizable actors on "Lost on Purpose." Others who were in the area to film were C. Thomas Howell, whose long list of movie credits started in 1983 with "The Outsiders;" James Lafferty, perhaps best known for his role as Nathan Scott on the CW television drama "One Tree Hill;" and Octavia Spencer (Constance Grady on the ABC series "Ugly Betty").

Michelle Lang, who doubles as the film's producer and a lead female actress, says many of the Los Angeles actors were contacted through mutual acquaintances while Fresno casting agent Carolyn DeVore supplied a large portion of the locals.

The traffic may not be cooperating, but the weather is perfect to shoot the scene at the dairy that has the buddies playing bocce ball.

A few days earlier at the same site, a dust storm nearly took out the cast and crew. But, in the spirit of independent moviemaking, the scene was shot through the dust because it created a great look.

Work won't end when the filming concludes. The Nelms will have only a few months to get the movie edited in time to show it at the film festivals where independents can get the attention of major distributors.

The hours are long and the work schedule is intense. But, Lang says, things could be a lot worse: "I worked in China making the TV series 'The Legend of Bruce Lee.' They work very fast there and we shot 50 one-hour episodes in six months. Compared to that, this is luxury."

ROADSIDE" CAST LIST:

SYNOPSIS:
Five young twenty -somethings are taking a trip for spring break.

A long the way they stop through a desert town

that is centered around "Jimmy's Rib-Shack".

Little do they know that this Rib-Shack is run

by a psycho family that are serving human remains

of people that have passed through town.

However, not all the people that pass through are served for dinner.

Some end up serving dinner after a lobotomy is performed on them,

which ultimately turns them into mindless slave of the rib-shack.

These twenty-somethings are now fighting to survive

as they are chased down by the Rib-Shack family

and their ultimate killing machine who wields a machete.

KAREN:
20, delicate young woman, attractive, hidden behind a bit of insecurity.

She is the heroine of the film.
Her sister is April. April had gone missing and she longs to see her again.

A sexual situation at one point in the film.

Strong acting ability and running ability.

NICK:
21, Handsome and sensitive looking.

Wears clothes that look straight of a Abercrombie catalogue.

Karen's boyfriend. Strong acting ability and athletic.

SAM:
19, scrawny dweeb with an outgoing personality.

He holds a video camera for most of the film.
Strong acting ability and can run.

TOMMY:
Early 20's, extremely muscular, loves to drink beer and party.

He is dating Courtney.

Must be comfortable with sexual situations.

COURTNEY:
18, sexy young thing that adores her bolyfriend Tommy.

She wears skimpy clothes. She is the sex pot of the film.

The actress playing this role must feel comfortable with sexual situations.

VINCE:
28, tall and muscular. He is in the military and is very confident.

He is the bad ass of the film.

He is looking for his brother who went missing and was last seen in this town.

Tries to escape and help the other survivors escape from this town.

He smokes cigarettes.

Strong acting ability and athletic.

JIMMY:
50, The owner of the R ib-Shack. Wears a slick suit.

He is a psycho and the ring leader of the all the disappearances.

Must be a strong actor.

THE SHAPE:
The Killer of the film. He is a part of the psychotic family that runs the rib-shack.

He is a hulking male that wipes out nearly the entire cast.

Wears a mask most of the film. No lines.

CARL:
40's, eloquent looking. He is the brains of the operation.

He is a part of the psycho "Rib-Shack family"

and performs lobotomies on the Rib-Shack victim's,

which ultimately turns them into mindless slaves that work at the Rib-Shack.

GUS:
50's, Redneck in coveralls, with wickedly crooked teeth

who works at a gas station in the desert. Smokes a pipe.

Think Billy Bob Thornton on the movie U-Turn. Solid Character actor.

BOY:
Early 20's. he almost gets hit by the stars of the film in the desert.

He is a zombie-like character who has fell victim to the rib-shack.

One scene.

SHERIFF HENRY WILKINS:
50's, an old man who is the Sheriff of this desert hick town.

He ends up being a apart of the strange disappearances in this desert town.

Sexual situation with Karen.

APRIL/RACHEL:
19, cute blonde girl. This is Karen's sister who has gone missing.

She has fell victim to the Rib-Shack and is now a waitress at the Rib-Shack.

Her name at the Rib-Shack is Rachel.

One scene.

9-1-1 Operator:
Three lines. Takes an emergency call from Same. Voice work only.

WOMAN:
Two lines. She is eating at the Rib-shack the end of the film and

nearly breaks her tooth on what appears to be a human finger bone.

A large portion of the cast and crew of ‘Stricken’ were on hand at the Oakhurst premiere of the movie.

A long line of 200 anxious moviegoers wound around the MET Cinema Friday night in anticipation of Matt Sconce's Oakhurst premiere of his first major film 'Stricken,' partially filmed in the Mountain Area.

North Fork resident Sconce was met by applause from a fully packed theatre as he introduced his film to his hometown audience.

"It was a surreal experience," Sconce said. "I grew up here. The people I know and love were finally able to see what my team and I had created. It was a nerve-wracking but amazing experience."

Response to his PG13 rated horror/thriller film was immediate -- screams followed by laughter were heard throughout the dimly lit theater.

Casting director and local resident Carollyn DeVore liked the movie so much she wants to see it travel far past Oakhurst. "I just loved it and think it will do very well," she said. "It could be released in nationwide theaters."

After the showing, attendees were invited to take a seat in the director's chair and record their response.

"I enjoyed it, it was very good," said Steve Martin of Fresno. "I had no expectations when I came to see the movie but it was very good and kind of reminded me of 'Nightmare on Elm Street.' The story line was not as predictable as I thought it would be -- I've seen big budget films not as good."

Although 'Stricken' was self-financed, it was apparent in the reviews that it did not affect the quality of the film.

"The visual effects were awesome -- I'd give it all the awards I can think of," said Jordan Martin, 19, of Fresno Teen Scene Street Team. "It was amazing. The dude -- Sconce -- is a genius."

Patricia Foster, 12, was impressed by Sconce's work and said she would watch 'Stricken' a second time. "I think it was scary, more scary than I thought it would be but I'd watch it again," she said. "I'd like to see more movies by Matt Sconce."

'Stricken' will make its Los Angeles debut July 27 at the Action on Film Award Festival. It already has the following nominations at the Festival:

Best Produced Screenplay

Seven distributors and two sales agents are lined up to see the film after its L.A. debut.

"Matt Sconce did excellent work for a beginning director," said Bob Bradford, fellow filmmaker.

The Met Theatre is at the corner of Highway 41 and Highway 49

in the Raley's Shopping Center.

If you did not get to take Director Matt Sconces Audition Workshop

at De Vore Studios - bring a Photo and Resume. Carollyn will

collect those for Matt. His next film will be a family film.

All ages...filmed in the Oakhurst - Bass Lake - Yosemite area -

(we heard rumors it may begin filming this fall)

Parents if your attending without your Child - bring their photo

and resume.(Stricken is a "Horror Film")

There are only 200 tickets. They are only $8 each.
